The Challenge: 316L Flange Failure in KOH Service
The client’s pipeline operates at 80°C with 30% KOH solution. The original flanges were made of 316L stainless steel. While 316L offers adequate corrosion resistance in dilute caustic solutions at ambient temperature, it approached its stress corrosion cracking (SCC) threshold under the combined conditions of 80°C and 30% KOH concentration. Continuous corrosion ultimately led to leakage, compromising production safety and equipment reliability.
This is a common failure mode in chemical processing plants — 316L stainless steel flanges perform well in many services but are not suitable for high-temperature caustic environments where SCC risk increases significantly above 60°C.
The Solution: Hastelloy C-276 (UNS N10276) Flanges

C-276 is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium superalloy containing approximately:
Nickel (Ni): ~57% — base matrix stability
Molybdenum (Mo): ~16% — reducing acid and pitting resistance
Chromium (Cr): ~16% — oxidizing environment protection
Tungsten (W): ~3-4% — enhanced crevice corrosion resistance
In 30% KOH solution, C-276 achieves a corrosion rate of less than 0.1 mm/year — far superior to 316L stainless steel. The high molybdenum and tungsten content provides excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, while the alloy exhibits extremely low susceptibility to caustic-induced stress corrosion cracking, maintaining stable performance in KOH environments up to 100°C.
